HP Beats Dell

The war for 3Par has ended, with HP being victorious over Dell. Despite signing on to a tentative agreement with Dell, 3Par seemed more than willing to entertain back-and-forth bids from the two companies, leading ultimately to HP’s final bid that tossed Dell out of the competition.HP, for its part, is seeking to broaden its portfolio by adding the types of storage solutions that 3Par offers. As cited by Computer World (“Update: HP tops Dell with $1.6B bid for 3Par”), Forrester Research’s Andrew Reichman emphasizes this point: “HP's portfolio is disjointed and kind of incomplete,” and it needs more of a storage presence if it is to become an effective force at the enterprise level. Oracle Hires Mark Hurd

Hewlett-Packard (HP) has been busy lately, both in pursuing storage-vendor 3PAR (against competing suitor Dell) and in dealing with an executive-level shakeup. Amidst allegations of sexual harassment, HP’s CEO Mark Hurd resigned his position. Oracle, however, has taken advantage of this situation, picking up Hurd as co-president of the struggling company.Although Hurd resigned from his position at HP following the sexual harassment allegations, Network World (“Oracle hires Mark Hurd as co-president”) reports that an investigation performed by both HP’s general legal counsel and by outside counsel concluded that the allegations did not violate the company’s policies.
