Data Center Industry Terms
S
- SAF
- Server Application Function. An API for server software.
- SAN
- Storage Area Network.
- SAP
- Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing. A leading ERP software package.
- SAR
- Segmentation and Re-assembly. Optional features of the Wireless Transport Protocol used to split large WTP messages into a number of smaller datagrams (with resend for failed datagrams), thereby improving the transmission efficiency of downloading large messages to a phone.
- SCCS
- Source Code Control System. An early version control system available on UNIX platforms. Widely regarded as having been superseded by rcs and cvs.
- Schema
- Oracle: The collection of database objects that are owned by a particular use are referred to as that user's schema. Every object in the database belongs to one and only one schema, and therefore, to one and only one user (although may still be accessed by many users).
- SCTP
- Stream Control Transmission Protocol.
- SDK
- 1. Software Development Kit.
2. Often taken to refer to Microsoft SDK.
- SDTS
- Spacial Data Transfer Standard. SDTS is a standard for the transfer of digital spatial data between (dissimilar) computer systems, with the potential for no information loss.
- Seed point
- A point (i.e. a location) against which information is tagged. Within a geographic area a seed point (which may also be referred to as its centroid) would have information associated with it about that geographic area.
- SEM
- Search Engine Marketing.
- Sensible Cooling Capacity
- The amount of heat energy the air conditioner can be expected to remove from the IT room or data center. Depending on the operating conditions, this may be less than the air conditioner rating because some of the air conditioner cooling capacity may be used up dehumidifying the air. Dehumidification is typically not desired in a data center but occurs anyway when the return air is low enough in temperature so that the dew point is reached as the air passes through the air conditioner. The resultant condensation of the humidity onto the air conditioner coils represents a loss of cooling capacity. Ideally, the air returning to the air conditioner is a high enough temperature so that the dew point is not reached during cooling, in which case no dehumidification occurs and the full air conditioner rating is used to cool the IT room heat load.
- Sensible heat
- Sensible heat is defined as the heat energy that causes a change in temperature of a substance but does not contribute to a change in state (for example, steam to liquid water) for the substance. The only type of heat energy produced by computers and IT equipment.
- Sensible Heat Ratio
- The ratio between an air conditioner’s sensible heat removal capacity and its total heat removal capacity. In an IT environment, higher sensible heat ratios contribute to lower operating costs and more effective equipment cooling. Ideally, this ratio is 1, meaning the entire air conditioner capacity is available to cool the IT loads. When this number is less than 1, it means that undesirable dehumidification is occurring in the air conditioner.
- SEO
- Search Engine Optimisation. The art of optimising a website so that it appears near the top of search engine search results.
- SEP
- Standby Emergency Power (power from emergency generators)
- SERP
- Search Engine Results Page(s).
- Server Rooms
- A concentration of file servers (computers)
- Servlet
- A Java server side module Servlets are platform-independent, 100% pure Java server-side modules that fit seamlessly into a Web server framework and can be used to extend the capabilities of a Web server with minimal overhead, maintenance, and support
- Set point
- User-set or automatic thresholds for heating, cooling, humidification, and dehumidification usually measured in the return air stream of the computer room air conditioner or air handler.
- Single phase (electricity)
- Single Phase electric power refers to the distribution of electric power using a system in which the voltage is taken from one Phase of a three Phase source. Single Phase distribution is used when loads are mostly lighting and heating, with few large electric motors. The generation of AC electric power by electric utilities is nearly always "Three Phase", in which the waveforms of three supply conductors are offset from one another by 120°. The standard frequency in the United States is 60 Hz.
- SIP
- Session Initiation Protocol. Used for setting up communications sessions on the internet, such as instant messaging, conferencing, telephony or whiteboarding.
- SLA
- Service Level Agreement.
- SMART
- Self Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology. A HDD diagnostic technology that monitors device performance and attempts to predict device failure. SMART software on the HDD monitors the internal performance of motors, media, heads and electronics of the drive. SMART software on the host monitors the overall reliability status of the drive.
- SME
- 1. Small and Medium Enterprises.
2. Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
