Late last year I was working on an article and while conducting interviews I was made aware of a new data center group that had formed called Data Center Pulse. My initial reaction was don’t we have enough trade groups as it is? But after further review I noticed an important feature about this group and that it was focused on being an advocate for the data center professional. Its goal is simple and that is to influence the industry through end users. I must also mention that Data Center Pulse is a non-profit organization.

At the time the question in my mind was will the industry embrace this new group or will it fade away. The answer is the industry is rapidly embracing Data Center Pulse.

This new grass roots group formed by end users was catching on in data center circles. Data Center Pulse first formed a group within LinkedIn and later developed its own website (www.datacenterpulse.org) to get its message out to the community. Through these two portals and word of mouth the membership grew and as of this month the membership has grown to over 1000 members. In just nine short months they have attracted members ranging from some of the most innovative startups to many of the largest companies in the world.

“We knew that there was a gap in the industry, but we were surprised at how quickly the membership grew”, says Dean Nelson, co-founder and Chairman of DCP.  “Our goal was simple; to create a place that datacenter industry operators could gather to share ideas on best practices and ultimately influence the industry. With the myriad of pressures we are all facing; rising costs, density increases, complexity and new ecological scrutiny; we knew that a collaborative community could prove to be very beneficial.”

To become a member of DCP you must qualify by being responsible for, one or more of the following within their own company: Data Center Strategy, Architecture/Design, Operations, Efficiency, Sustainability or Use. DCP does not allow members with primary jobs in sales, marketing, PR, consulting or business development. In addition all members must be active within the group.

As this group continues to grow its influence within the industry will as well. They are already receiving attention from several groups and government agencies. The DCP group represents billions of dollars of annual purchases that drive the IT economy. They are the datacenter customers. With no financial agenda and a list of activities and projects that will impact data center professionals this group is surely on its way to becoming a major influencer in the industry.

For more information end users can join DCP through this link: http://join.datacenterpulse.org. Non end-users can join the DCP Industry group through this link: http://join-ind.datacenterpulse.org.
