What will you do if you wish to download certain movie/video or software? 99 out of 100 will say 'go online and download it. Downloading data products has gained popularity for large sized items over a period of time and in significant manner. This type of choice reduces carbon footprints in a big way (88% approximately). Still, debates are on, as the peripherals and data centers involved in this task are themselves emitting carbon.

Personnel of WSP and Microsoft got doubtful and hence calculated the software downloads by data centers and web respectively. They also calculated the energy used to download Office2007 for a certain P.C. Their conclusion was that, the difference between carbon emission of downloading a copy of Office2007 and that of the retail unit is almost 1 gallon of gasoline, which is humongous and debatable.

Matt Peterson from global green hits bang on this issue by highlighting Microsoft's role in this environment friendly effort. Microsoft has wisely implemented a measure to reduce power consumption of data centers by allowing them to cool down in natural conditions. This has reduced electricity consumption by almost 40 percent. This measure is mostly applied in cold regions like Iceland where environment is automatically suitable for such results. This ground breaking solution is being implemented by various organizations worldwide.

Such inventive drifts like downloading of data items will keep on affecting demands for servers and their cooling down requirements. Practical solutions like naturally cooled data centers will help organizations to optimize cost savings and increase their contributions towards environment saving.

People from Green data have devised an energy/carbon calculator to reduce carbon footprints by shifting their data center to Iceland. Thus other companies can go virtual with this concept of nature loving data centers and help establishing a greener tomorrow.
