John Sheputis is a happy leader. Want to know why? He is the CEO of Fortune Data Centers which has very recently been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certificate. Fortune Data Centers was founded in 2005 and offers industrial grade data centers with special focus on deploying large scale, mission-critical IT operations.
Sheputis has also won himself big time brownie points by stating that his customers should be able to derive gains from a LEED certified data center at normal costs – “we believe that companies should not have to pay extra for energy efficiency, rather they should realize a reduction in costs. Fortune and our tenants are collaborating to maximize efficiencies and our tenants receive 100 % of the cost savings that result from energy saving.” The LEED Gold certificate is awarded by the US Green Building Council or USGBC which is a non-profit community of leaders who are working towards making green buildings available to all and certifying green buildings. Fortune has won this certificate for its San Jose Data center which is a highly energy efficient center housed in a 78,000 square foot building. The center was inaugurated in April in a 43,000 square feet space and is one of the biggest in Silicon Valley. It is also the first multi-tenant data center and has earned the certificate because it has made full usage of it tenant space. With the LEED under its belt, this data center can also boast about being the first of its kind in many ways in San Jose. The data center has a whopping capacity of serving 8MW of critical load. It joins an elite club of few data centers which have been given the gold LEED – Digital Realty Trust and NTT America to name just a couple. So why did the gold LEED come Fortune’s way? Well, because Education, Innovation, Infrastructure and Recycling were the four main pillars for this data center.
Normally data centers go in for raised floor-up approach to provide cooling to their servers. Fortune showed an innovative approach by going in for an overhead down approach. This led to a Power Usage Effectiveness Rating of 1.37 at full load capacity. Showing a true commitment to energy conservation, Fortune put their money where their intent is. They invested in infrastructure wisely by opting for components which have already been rated for their energy efficiency like UPS. Fortune also followed at least 2 Rs in the green triangle – namely Reuse and Recycle. This perhaps anyway led to the third R of Reduction of energy bills. When they were converting their space to a data center they re-used almost 100% of the construction material instead of shipping it off to some dump.
