Fire Protection

Fire protection - sprinkler versus gaseous

A typical data center consists of expensive IT equipment and other related paraphernalia apart from precious and confidential data. There are several dangers for this data, equipment and the most precious of all these things – the human lives; and one of the greatest causes of danger is from fire. Fire does not occur often, but when it does it is a serious concern. There are several incidents which provide ample proof for this statement.

Anatomy of a pre-action sprinkler system

Of the various factors which pose a hazard and threat to the functioning of a data center, fire is its deadliest enemy. Since fire is indirectly related to heat which is available in plenty within the data center the safety against fire is a must not only from the technical perspective but from the regulatory aspect as well in that adequate fire protection systems must be installed as per the local or national regulations governing the same.

How Early Warning Fire Detection Works

Fire is one of basic elements of the universe as per the Oriental philosophy apart from other elements such as water, air etc. It is extremely useful element but can be equally destructive at times. This article discusses the systems which tend to generate a warning about fire before it has the opportunity to wreak havoc in a data center.

Hypoxic Air & Preventing Fires

The following article was condensed from our complete story in the February print issue of the Data Center Journal which will be available to our subscribers in two weeks. The story covers a new fire prevention technology called hypoxic air venting and the struggle one manufacturer is having in getting this new technology accepted with fire protection and worker safety organizations in the United States.

Hypoxic Air Venting
A new concept in fire protection has emerged and it has promise. First, let me state that according to FirePASS®, the company that has the patent on this technology, this is not a fire protection system, but rather a fire prevention system.
